The Fortunes of Magic - a blog novel

Chapter 1 - FRIENDSMy parents came to Planet 663-457 when I was twelve and we moved into a house built especially for us about a quarter mile from the edge of the village. The house had to be specially built because the natives are roughly twice the size of us. They weren't twice as tall, just really big; living in one if their homes would be just weird. We came here because my parents are scientists and so they could study the local people and their society like you might study an interesting…Continue

I remember the first time I met the Devil

I remember the first time I met the DevilI remember the first time I met the Devil… that is, the first time we stepped toe to toe.            I was at a Cantina, in the Sierra a frequent ‘hang-out’ for the Prince of Darkness. Think he lavished his renown in the folklore of our backwoods, the ‘stuck-up prick’…and sought such opportunities for recognition.            Well, I had been having the usual arguments with my old lady at the time, and sneaked out into the night… There was no horse for me…Continue

…And Life Will Imitate ArtPalm Sunday… Bloody SundayWhen I woke up the sun was already at 45 degrees. The first of its rays hit my bloodshot eyes, as Maria’s fingers played with my hair. She was trying or braiding a long palm leaf she’d gotten from Mass that morning into my Moño.… I could hear Pepsi too.“Ahora se ve como un verdadero Apache’’’He looked at me like I wished my father would now n’ then...and apparently, I looked like some kinda Apache' to him.“…Y que te paso, papo?”She asked…Continue

It's been a while since I had this dream. I usually use such as this to fuel a story. I'm added a name or two and something of a beginning, but the rest is the dream. Is it complete in itself, or a scene in a bigger story? Only time will tell. Hope you all enjoy it.~~~~~Pixies As man expanded into space they left their fantasies and fairytales behind, or at least they thought they did until they ran across a race that called themselves Pixies. That wasn’t exactly the right word, but it was as…Continue

Had a dream Lastnight...

Had a Dream Lastnight...(First of all: Ever loved a whore? Its worse when she loves you back, Brother;)    It took me back to a time and place, when I was still a boy – a shit stain, to the older guys in the neighborhood, who’d yet to make his bones.  We had a family friend then, a hardened sort from the old country who worked the whorehouses in Uptown/Downtown NYC.  I was 12, and shy, and my father thought, if I got laid things would change for me.  So one day, at his request, Vicente (let’s…Continue

Insomnia

Insomnia (By Wilson Benigno Sanchez|© 2008 Wilson Benigno Sanchez)    Through one blood-shot half open eyelid I can see her, and then I don’t… I don’t know how long it’s been betwixt those two or three moments of fleeting consciousness. But there she is… She doesn’t seem to have moved, or noticed me, and pays no mind to my sleepy peek-a-boo games. Truth is my eyes are blood shot because this phlegm-fatale has been smoking up a quiet storm over there at the far side of the café, for who knows…Continue

Funeral for a Friend (A Narrative)

Funeral for a Friend            We’re drinking, listening to pasillos, bullshiting.  My cousin Henry’s talking and his friend is looking my way…staring at me.  OK, you want a stare down?  Now it’s going to be con-fron-ta-tion-al.  Then I realize, this guy’s really in another world.  He spits of a sudden the stupid Serrano!  On my floor – disrespectful fuck!            Alright, he’s drunk as hell… I ask him nicely to show my home a little more respect.  After a few minutes he does it again.  And…Continue

Stunned to a stillness, a quiet, surprised my stylus consciousness made broader by quotes:

“In Heaven, all the interesting people are missing.” - Friedrich Nietzsche

Initially, at first reading, bewildering, but now given what preceding I wrote about: my sense of heaven within. Makes a new sense. There is a clamor for our attention, I being one of many voices equally guilty.…

Well, Henry..this is certainly a loaded question debated by many, and an extremely good one. I am of the opinion that we will never catch up and repair the damage that has been done, until we start investing in education and placing it first. We need to quit making cuts to education. It seems to me that the most vulnerable areas always seem to be cut first. We need to help those that are in the formative years and show signs of needing special help in certain areas. They can't be passed over and ignored. If they don't get the help they need, many drop out or they just never grasp it, making college hard to handle, that is, if they even continue on to college. Many graduate without knowing any algebra or how to write a proper sentence. It is really sad to see this. I call it the "dumbing down" of America. Thank you for your comments. I am going to check out the link you provided us with.

Speaking of cultured and intelligent people, will America continue to be the intellectual center of the world (assuming it is) ?  What's going to happen to America's crumbling public education system? Currently we are so far behind in K-12 education (according to internation PISA assessment).  This book is an eye-opener:  http://www.amazon.com/Americas-Biggest-Hoax-Raymond-Kwan/dp/0741480875

Chapter 2 is up - too soon??? Let me know. I think I figured out a way to keep each chapter in line but separate. We'll see how it works.

That sounds great Anna. I look forward to reading it.

I posted the original blog one chapter a week. I could do the same here if you like. Chapters are short mostly. Maybe I could do it more often. Up to you.

Thank you, Hem. I hope to keep this group and the Book Review Group active. I am attempting to bring in some of my publishing (editors and proofreaders) as well as other author contacts. I don't know if I mentioned it or not, but if anyone here is also on Twitter, you can also tweet me: @beckysbooknotes. I thought I was following CB already and found out last night that I wasn't..I am now! :) If anyone has any comments or suggestions, please contact me. Anna, just a suggestion, but if you would like to put your book on here, rather than putting the entire book up at once (which would be too long for the purposes here), why not put up the equivalent of a short story, 2-3 chapters at a time? If you do this once a week, say about 10 pages or so..it would give everyone a chance to see it and give suggestions. I am thinking of doing the same thing with mine. How does everyone feel about this?
